I’m selling my Carmina derbies and decided to put together a guide for those planning to sell their shoes online.
1. Clean/ polish your shoes before photographing.
Your shoes will look so much nicer on camera.
2. Take excellent 5-6 photos with a quality camera.
People are visual. Appealing photographs will draw interest to your shoes, so use the best camera you have.
Excellent photos are 80% location. Take advantage of natural light. Avoid outdoor/street photos, and photos of you wearing the shoes. These touches may undercut the shoes’ value.
Take many, many photos. I took around 50 and chose 5. Take several photos of different positions (front view, profile, bottom view, heels, any accessories). Display the best ones.
3. Find an online vendor
I used The Shoe Snob Marketplace, which seemed straightforward. You can post 5 photos max and they charge a 5% commission, not including PayPal fees.
4. Write professional descriptions
Use short, concise sentences to describe your shoes and the exact model. Be grammatical and provide accurate descriptions.
List every item your shoes come with (e.g. shoe trees, box, extra laces, creams/wax) and their condition. Include how many times you’ve worn your shoes. Viewers gain trust by reading professional writing.
Expect at least a 50% + drop for used shoes.
For example, I bought my Carmina shoes around $550 and listed them for $210 (including shipping). That’s a 62% price drop.
As a consumer, which option would you choose: expensive, used shoes or brand new shoes at a slightly higher cost, sold directly by Crockett and Jones? Used shoes depreciate like cars and diamonds.
